The Angelus of Holy Wisdom

In the traditional Angelus, we recall the ringing of bells in medieval Spain as the workers paused to pray on their way to the fields at six in the morning , at twelve  noon just before the midday meal, and again at six in the evening, returning to the village.  These times of prayer were meant to sanctify the day, and the cycle of time, and were inspired by the prayerful piety of the Muslims of Spain, who prayed five times a day.  This tradition, in turn, was partially inspired by the Syrian Christian monks that the Prophet encountered on his desert journeys.  The Angelus also recalls the divine feminine,  in the form of the Holy Sophia who becomes the womb of new consciousness for the epiphany of the Logos.

The Holy Name of Jesus is mystically present between the two verses of the Ave Maria, and need not be pronounced, since Jesus the Logos is found in the depths of each Soul.  The pause is short, a pulse or moment of one or two syllabic beats, like a heart beat, or the sound of an Angel’s wing.  In this way, the performance of the prayer points to the Holy Name of Jesus as it is spoken  in the Heart, and calls to mind the Jesus Prayer of the East:

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you.  Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. [pause and say the Holy Name of Jesus in your heart] Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us now and at the hour of our death.  Amen

When you pray the Rosary with this Ave Maria, you are also praying the Jesus Prayer at the same time:

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, have mercy on me a sinner.

The icon depicts Christ as Holy Silence. The inscription on the bottom border says, "Hê hagia hêsychia", that is, "Holy silence."  ΉΆΓΙΑΈΣΥΧΙΑ

Collect

Pour fourth, we beseech Thee, O Holy One, Thy Grace into our hearts; that, as we have witnessed the indwelling of the Logos by the message of an Angel, so by the fruit of the Cross we may ascend to our true home in glory.   We ask this through the same Living Christos, our mercy, our light and our life.   Amen.
