The Chaplet of St. Michael the Archangel

Ask the Angels to Surround and

Protect You with Love.

O Most Glorious Prince, Michael the Archangel,

be ever mindful of us here and everywhere,

pray always for us to the Holy One of God. Amen.

Princeps gloriosissime Michael Archangele, esto memor nostril; hic et ubique semper

precare pro nobis Filium Dei.  Amen.

The chaplet is begun by saying the following invocation on the medal of St. Michael:

O God, come to my assistance.

O Lord, make haste to help me.

Glory be to you O God, Living One, Word, and Spirit; now and for all ages and aeons.  Amen.

Say one Our Father on each of the next four beads in honor

of the four Archangels Michael, Gabriel, Rafael and Uriel

(some say the fourth bead in honor of your Guardian Angel)

Say one Our Father and three Hail Marys

after each of the following nine salutations

in honor of the nine choirs of angels.

Say the Our Father on the single bead, and the Hail Marys on the three beads together.

1.  By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of Seraphim, may God enkindle in us  the fire of perfect love. Amen.  Our Father…  Hail Mary…(3x)

2. By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of Cherubim, may God grant us grace to leave the ways of error and to run in the paths of knowledge. Amen.

3. By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of Thrones, may God infuse into our hearts a true and sincere spirit of humility. Amen.

4. By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of Dominions, may God give us the grace of non-attachment to this world.   Amen.

5. By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of Powers, may God protect our souls from forgetfulness, and grant us the remembrance of God’s Love.   Amen.

6. By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of Virtues may God preserve us from all evil and grant us strength.  Amen.

7. By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of Principalities, may God fill our souls with a true spirit of peace. Amen.

8. By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of Archangels, may God give us faithfulness, in order that we attain the vision of glory. Amen.

9. By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of Angels, may God grant us their protection in this mortal life and their company hereafter in eternal glory. Amen.

The chaplet is concluded with the following prayers:

O glorious Prince St. Michael, chief and commander of the heavenly hosts, guardian of souls, vanquisher of rebel spirits, servant in the house of the Divine Master, and our admirable companion, thou who dost shine with excellence and superhuman virtue, vouchsafe to deliver us from all evil, who turn to thee with confidence, and enable us by thy gracious protection to serve God more and more faithfully every day.

V. Pray for us, O glorious St. Michael, Prince of the Divine Assembly of Jesus the Savior.

R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Prayer

Almighty and Everlasting God, who by a prodigy of goodness and a merciful desire for the salvation of all people, hast appointed the most glorious Archangel, St. Michael, Prince of Thy gathered faithful ones and Holy Realms; make us worthy, we beseech Thee, to be delivered from all enemies of our mind and heart, body and soul, that none of them may harass us at the hour of death, but that we may be conducted into the august presence of Thy Divine Majesty. This we beg through the merits of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

In 1751 Saint Michael appeared to Antonia d’Astonac, a Carmelite nun in Portugal, and told her that he wished to be honored by nine salutations corresponding to the nine Choirs of Angels, which should consist of one Our Father and three Hail Marys in honor of each of the angelic choirs. Whosoever would practice this devotion in his honor would have, when approaching the Holy Table, an escort of nine angels chosen from each one of the nine choirs. In addition, for the daily recital of these nine salutations he promised his continual assistance and that of all the holy angels during life, and the transition to death.  This version is a new translation from the original Portuguese, slightly modified.

The words in boldface type indicate the essential meditation concept for each Choir, and are a helpful way to commit the nine salutations to memory.  The nine Choirs of Angels can also be linked to the Sephirot in the Qabbalah’s Tree of Life.  Since the Angelic realms are above this earthly realm, Malkuth, the nine Angelic Choirs coordinate with the upper levels of the Sephirot.  Care should be taken when entering mystical experiences that the believer has sufficient grounding and preparation.  A spiritual director or companion is important.  It is also helpful to use the spice box from the Jewish Havdalah service to bring one back to ground level.  If you don’t have a spice box, simply keep some cloves, nutmeg, allspice, or other sweet spice handy to smell when you are descending from the heights of prayer.

The chaplet consists of nine groups of one large bead  and three small beads with four large beads and a St. Michael medal attached.  If you do not have a chaplet of St. Michael, you may request one from Fr. Foss.  Donations to cover costs are appreciated.

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  Amen.

AVE MARIA

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee, blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.  Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us* now and at the hour of our death.  Amen.
